BRAINS in PROGRESS -a special event for parents and their teens

Thanks to all who joined us for the LM Connects event on March 18 featuring Dr. Stephen Dewey - BRAINS IN PROGRESS. Dr. Dewey discussed the neurological effects of addictive substances and behaviors—including nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, online gaming (fortnite, roblox), and gambling — on the adolescent brain. The program empowered parents and students with the knowledge and confidence to guide decision making.
If you were unable to attend the event, click here for a summary of his presentation, and download a set of informative handouts that were distributed that evening.
LM CONNECTS sponsors a Community-Level Youth Development Evaluation (CLYDE) survey every two years which is completed by students at Hommocks and Mamaroneck High School. The survey highlights local alcohol and substance use trends and helps to inform district and community programming. The results of the survey were presented this past fall, as we heard directly from survey expert Dan Webb regarding his insights on the trends our teens are facing concerning alcohol and drug use specifically our community. In addition, a panel of support professionals - social workers Helene Fremder and Nicolette Laoiza, youth officer Frank Maresca, and LMCCC’s clinical director Alan Dienstag - shared their insights and provided meaningful suggestions for how parents and community members can support our students. Visit the event page to view a recording!
One major take home of the evening regarding prevention when it comes to substance use/abuse: communicate often and early with your kids! Check out this list of DOs and DON'Ts to keep in mind when having conversations with your kids.
