The most important tip for parenting in the age of COVID-19, remote & hybrid learning:


Validate, validate again, and validate some more.

All of the feelings that your child is having is valid.  All of the feelings that you are having are valid.  All of them.  


One of the easiest, most neglected, yet most powerful things you can do for your child is to be a safe and steady presence for them.  We don’t have to fix things, we don’t have to give advice or cheer them on.  We simply need to be there for them.   How do we let our kids know that we are there?  We validate their feelings.  Our kids need to know that it is okay to feel whatever it is that they are feeling.  These are tricky times.  They need to know that it’s okay to not feel okay some of the time.


How to validate.

You convey to the other person in words, gestures and behavior that the way that they are feeling is understandable and makes sense.  You don’t have to agree with their feelings, you just need to show that you understand them.  That’s it.  If you do this, and only this, you are actively helping your teen to cope.
